Srinagar: In the MBBS admission scam, a doctor from Rawalpora, Srinagar, was allegedly duped of Rs 23 Lakh by a fake educational consultancy agency in New Town, promising to secure MBBS admission for his nephew in a private college in Bengal.
The doctor filed a complaint after realising he had been duped. According to the complaint, he went to the office of a commercial complex in Action Area II, New Town, last month, where 15 former employees were working in three cubicles.
Three employees promised to secure his nephew a seat at a private medical college for a fee of ₹23 lakhs. They also allegedly asked the doctor to submit his nephew’s educational documents and register for the West Bengal counselling program. Following this, he paid the money in two transactions on November 18: ₹15 lakhs via RTGS and ₹8 lakhs in cash.
According to a TOI media news report, the police said the men gave him a fake admission letter and said they would pick the doctor and his nephew up from a hotel in New Town, and then they would go to college together. He said, “On Wednesday, they called me around 10.30, claiming they were coming to pick me up soon. An hour later, they called me again and asked me to visit the college by myself. They said they would meet us there. When we reached the college, they were not there. Their phones were switched off and the college authorities denied knowing them and refused admission to my nephew.”
“We filed a police complaint and went with them to the office. The office was closed and several gadgets were missing. The pages of the office register containing our names were torn. We tried to find our nephew’s documents, which he had kept as security, but they were also missing”, added the doctor.
