According to the woman’s lawyer, the couple was in court for a maintenance and recovery matter. The accused, seated in the row behind his wife, allegedly pulled out a bottle of acid and threw it on her after refusing to accept certain conditions in the settlement. He had reportedly been pressuring her to withdraw the attempted murder case. When she insisted on proceeding with the cases, he attacked her, reports TOI.
The woman suffered acid burns on her mouth and other parts of her body, and damage to the lens of her left eye. Several lawyers seated nearby were also affected by splashes of acid and received immediate medical attention.
In a dramatic turn of events, the accused allegedly consumed poison shortly after the attack in an apparent attempt to end his life. He, too, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Court security personnel quickly detained the accused before he could flee. Police from the Umra police station reached the court complex soon after and began an investigation into the incident.
